TechBullion: Rural Healthcare Drives New Models for Earlier Detection

TechBullion examines how rural healthcare is reshaping the way serious illness is found and treated, and where Helio Genomics fits into that shift. Across much of rural America, provider shortages, long travel distances, and limited diagnostic infrastructure can delay screening, follow-up testing, and specialist referrals. Those delays carry real consequences, particularly in cancer, where timing often decides whether a disease is caught while it is still treatable.

The scale of the challenge is significant. The article notes that non-metro counties are home to roughly 46 million people, about 13.7 percent of the U.S. population, yet span nearly 72 percent of the country’s land area. Rural areas often report higher cancer death rates than urban ones and have seen slower declines in cancer mortality, in part because care exists somewhere in the system, but patients cannot always reach it early enough.

In response, a new generation of collaborative models is bringing diagnostic capability closer to the patient. One example is the Rural Health Transformation Collaborative, an effort co-chaired by Microsoft that unites health systems, technology companies, payers, and community organizations around expanding access to technology-enabled care. Blood-based diagnostics play a central role in this approach, because samples can be collected close to the patient while analysis happens through broader lab and cloud infrastructure, rather than depending on centralized imaging and repeat in-person visits.

TechBullion points to Helio Genomics as a practical example within the collaborative. Helio’s HelioLiver test detects hepatocellular carcinoma, the most common form of liver cancer, by combining cell-free DNA methylation patterns, protein biomarkers, and demographic information through machine learning. The need is pressing: liver cancer is one of the fastest-growing causes of cancer death in the United States, yet fewer than 20 percent of high-risk patients receive recommended surveillance, a gap that widens in rural settings. As CEO Bharat Tewarie put it, “For patients in rural communities, this collaboration represents a step toward more accessible early detection and better outcomes.”
